Towards the end of last year, the UK recorded a rise in demand for manufactured goods, according to figures released by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).
This is likely to be heralded as good news, particularly in light of the fears over the economy, which is still struggling to get on its feet in the wake of the recession caused by the credit crunch.
Manufacturers affected by the rise in fortunes may have had to invest in additional storage space, perhaps by making use of warehousing in West Sussex and pick and pack services.
After all, their current facilities may be too small to deal with the additional demand.
According to the CBI, in November, export order books improved compared with October.
However, the business group also revealed that manufacturers expect prices to rise faster in the short-term and consequently they predicted slower growth in manufacturing output.
Responding to its Industrial Trends Survey, 21 per cent of producers polled said total orders were above normal.
Meanwhile, 26 per cent of manufacturers predicted output will rise, while 22 per cent expected it will fall.
Responding to the figures, CBI chief economic advisor Ian McCafferty said: “Manufacturing demand improved in November, following October’s more negative figures for total and export orders. Demand is now back in line with that over the summer months, suggesting that particularly weak order book readings [in October] may have been a one-off.”
He added: “Factory output is still set to rise, albeit with modest expectations for growth compared with recent months, as the boost from re-stocking starts to fade.”
When firms are experiencing a rise in demand, sometimes they have to rely on outsourcing their warehousing. In some cases, this involves getting storage space in Sussex. Such activity means they are more able to keep up with the level of orders they are processing.
