At one time, plastics were treated with distrust and disdain – whilst they managed to get a lot of jobs done more efficiently, their effect on the planet and even on our bodies was not quite clear, with many people worrying they would cause a great amount of waste that wouldn’t break down and that they could even act as a carcinogen.
However, with the ability to recycle plastics that we have today, they are actually a very pliable, versatile solution to many different problems, making items lighter, stronger, safer and even helping to make our homes warmer.
From the fact that they have lead us to technology that would be completely impossible without them (wind turbines and solar panels, for instance, would not be viable were it not for the fact that the plastics used in harnessing the energy were available) to the fact that many products can now be smaller, safer, stronger and sleeker when made from plastic, one of the biggest benefits remains the fact that better products can now be found cheaper.
Even in our homes, everything from guttering to wall cladding can be made from plastics, whilst plastic insulation can also help cut energy bills by nearly 75%. In commerce, the fact that plastic is lightweight means that a great amount of fuel can be saved in transportation and even that planes and vehicles themselves can be more economical due to the fact that they can be lighter and in turn use less fuel. Therefore, plastics are actually surprisingly kind to the environment.
Whilst guttering and wall cladding may seem insignificant, without them being available in plastic, simple household repairs would be a great deal more expensive and even a great deal more unsightly. So, no matter what it is you may need for your home, it may well be worth seeing if buying a plastic version could make it cheaper, better and even more attractive.
